It has been a long time coming — 39 years to be exact — but women's tennis players will receive prize money equal to the men's at Wimbledon this year.

Under increasing pressure from female stars like Venus Williams and Maria Sharapova and from society at large, the club announced Thursday that it would put an end to a practice that had proved ever more divisive.

In truth, the gap in prize money had become more symbolic than substantive. The women's singles champion last year, Amélie Mauresmo earned 95 percent of what mens' champion Roger Federer earned, with Mauresmo receiving £625,000 to Federer's £655,000.
